We’re A Small Family-Owned Orchard
S & J Mandarin Grove was started in April 2001 by Steve and June Bourn on five acres in the quiet Newcastle countryside of Placer County, California. With its warm days, cool nights, and decomposed granite soil, Placer County is an excellent location to grow quality produce, especially our sweet, seedless, organic Owari Satsuma mandarin oranges.
Steve planted all of our mandarin trees one-by-one with help from our two sons, Brian and David. After all these years, with lots of mowing and extra care, the mandarin trees are doing great! While Steve cares for the trees himself and keeps the citrus grove looking like a beautiful park, June manages the shipping orders, the Farmers’ Market, and the orchard’s marketing and sales efforts.
Today we have 350 Owari Satsuma mandarin trees and take pride in our top quality, sweet, seedless mandarins. Each mandarin orange is hand-picked and only the very best are sold to our loyal customers or hand-packed to be shipped across the United States.
Organic Mandarin Oranges
When we decided to put the land we built our family home on to use, farming organic mandarin oranges was the perfect solution. The decision to grow organic citrus is important to us, not only for the health and well being of our family, but every living creature around us.
S & J Mandarin Grove does not apply any synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers. We use all natural products in accordance with requirements of the:
We are proud to say we are fully certified with California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF)!
A portion of our property is devoted to preserving wildlife.
We are very fortunate that wild Canadian geese and several varieties of ducks have made our pond and property their home. They return year after year to breed, enjoy our large pond and protected island, and graze on our cover crop of pasture grass.
We’re all about family!
From fishing in the pond and evening walks, to helping out in the orchard and watching the geese and ducks, our family loves spending time out on the property and playing in the Mandarin Grove.
Steve and June, their sons David and Brian, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and grandkids Natalie and Carter spend a lot of time outside and enjoying nature. Natalie and Carter especially love riding through the mandarin orchard and around the pond with Grandpa!
Our organic mandarin orchard provides not only the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but a fabulous opportunity to meet new people who visit the orchard or visit our booth at the Sunday Sacramento Farmers’ Market!
